I don’t say this to make you mad but I have seen it over and over again that the success of your business is not just selling a bunch of your product or service or the quality of your employees but also how much you, as the owner, get in the way of progress.
Recently, I was talking to an employee that had just come on board with a new company. The owner knew that the company was not meeting its potential but really didn’t know why. The new employee could see the potential in the company but it was poorly organized and didn’t have many processes in place to ensure successful completion of projects. So this employee decided to take the positive road discussing with the owner why the company was underperforming and the things that needed to change immediately.
Fast forward two weeks and no progress had been made. It wasn’t that the employees were fighting change, it wasn’t that the cost of change was great, it was that the owner of the company was checked out. He didn’t buy into the change and wasn’t going to change what he was doing either.
Remember the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. How will your business make more money if you won’t do things differently than the way you are doing them today that is not working? Selling more won’t fix a broken company, it will just make it more clear that you are failing and may even fail faster. And why won’t you change? Pride? Laziness? Craziness?
I guess we’ll never know, but the next time you want to make changes in your company make sure that you are committed to your own changes.
